Job Description:
About the Role
Carbon is looking for a Senior Manufacturing Engineer to join our team in Santa Clara, CA. The ideal candidate is passionate about solving complex manufacturing challenges and thrives on digging into difficult problems across hardware, software, and data to find root cause and drive lasting fixes.
In this role, you will develop and improve the manufacturing processes for Carbon’s 3D printer systems and large accessories in a low-volume, high-mix environment, where we build many different complex products in small quantities. You will lead end-of-line troubleshooting of our printers, diagnosing and fixing product issues so every system is right before it ships to a customer. You’ll also drive new process development across the organization, building systematic, repeatable infrastructure that makes our production line more consistent and self-sustaining. This is not a line-uptime or equipment-maintenance role. The focus is on product quality; your work will let the production team move fast with confidence, knowing that every product leaving the building meets Carbon’s exacting quality standards.
This position will be based in our Thomas Rd, Santa Clara facility and is onsite 5 days a week, Monday - Friday.
This role is not eligible for current Visa sponsorship or transfer. This role is not eligible for relocation.
Responsibilities:
- Lead root cause analysis and troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical, optical, and software systems, using data analysis and MES tools to resolve issues at their source and escalating to subject matter experts when needed.
- Serve as a key technical resource for the production floor, quickly unblocking technicians and operators so the line keeps moving.
- Drive corrective actions through to full resolution and implement lasting process improvements that increase efficiency, quality, and repeatability.
- Support NPI and new process development, partnering with Design, Systems, Production, Quality, and Supply Chain to get products and processes ready for production.
- Design and build test fixtures and tooling to improve manufacturing and test processes.
- Program, troubleshoot, and maintain servers and PCAs.
- Turn technical findings into updated work instructions and process documentation so fixes are captured and sustained on the production floor.
- Train technicians and engineers, in-house and at supplier sites, on new and existing processes.
- Organize manufacturing workflows and ensure that manufacturing procedures follow safety and environmental regulations.
Requirements:
- B.S./M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience (excluding internships) in a low-volume, high-mix environment.
- Ability to manage shifting priorities in a fast-paced setting.
- Hands-on troubleshooting experience with complex electro-mechanical, pneumatic, optical, or similarly integrated systems.
- Proven track record of resolving production line issues and non-conformances using structured root cause methods (8D, 5-Why, Fishbone, or similar).
- Proficiency with CAD tools for designing fixtures and tooling.
- Strong written and verbal communicator who can turn technical findings into clear work instructions and corrective action plans, and who works effectively across Design, Systems, Production, Quality, and Supply Chain teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience troubleshooting equipment with UV lasers or high-end optical systems..
- Experience building KPI dashboards and applying statistical tools to identify trends and drive process improvements.
- Experience in additive manufacturing or 3D printing production.
- Proficiency in Python or similar scripting languages for querying, analyzing, and visualizing manufacturing data. experience with Splunk or Quickbase is a plus.
At Carbon, we look at the person holistically and carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation. The compensation bracket for this position is $137,600 - $206,400 per year. In order to maintain equitable internal pay practices, we aim to hire new employees near the midpoint of $172,000 taking into account your experience, work location, certifications, and the unique skills you bring to the role.
