Data Center Network Shift Superintendent
Position Summary
The Data Center Network Shift Superintendent is the senior field leader on site during assigned shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays, and is responsible for the safe, productive and quality-compliant execution of network infrastructure and structured cabling operations. This role directly supervises Field Lead Technicians (L3), Fiber Splicers and Field Logistics Technicians and, through the L3s, the broader crew of network and cabling technicians, ensuring every shift delivers measurable progress toward project milestones with no compromise on quality or safety.
The Shift Superintendent's focus is entirely on the field: leading the workforce, driving execution, developing the team, upholding standards and representing the company to facility staff and owner personnel present during off-hours. This is a hands-on leadership role that demands strong technical credibility, crew accountability and the discipline to hold the same standard at 2 AM on a holiday as during a regular business day.
Shift schedules are subject to change based on project requirements. Other duties, responsibilities and qualifications may be required or assigned.
Core Responsibilities
Field Execution and Shift Ownership
• Hold full accountability for all network infrastructure and cabling operations during the assigned shift, ensuring work advances the project schedule without interruption across nights, weekends and holidays.
• Direct Field Lead Technicians (L3) on shift, assigning work fronts based on project phase, crew skill and daily priorities; serve as the escalation point for complex technical issues, multi-domain failures or field conditions that L3s cannot resolve independently.
• Conduct a structured shift handoff at the start and end of every shift, communicating accurate status on open work fronts, material constraints, safety concerns and schedule risks.
• Make real-time field decisions to maintain crew productivity and address emerging conditions independently, escalating to the Operations Manager only when warranted.
Scheduling and Productivity
• Own shift-level schedule performance: track progress against the daily work plan and adjust task assignments, crew positioning and work sequencing throughout the shift to protect milestone dates.
• Monitor workforce productivity in real time; identify and eliminate impediments, including access delays, material shortages, coordination gaps and rework situations, before they impact the schedule.
• Prepare accurate shift reports documenting work completed, footage installed, tests passed, issues encountered and next-shift priorities; submit before end of shift.
• Coordinate with the Shift Superintendents on other shifts and the Operations Manager to ensure overnight and weekend work aligns with the overall project schedule and owner expectations.
Team Development and Leadership
• Supervise, mentor and develop Field Lead Technicians (L3), Fiber Splicers and Field Logistics Technicians; provide direct coaching on leadership effectiveness, technical standards, crew management and professional conduct, and support L3s in their development of the L1 and L2 technicians beneath them.
• Set clear performance expectations for Field Lead Technicians (L3) and hold them accountable for the productivity, quality and behavioral standards of their crews; address performance issues directly and escalate to the Operations Manager as appropriate.
• Identify skill gaps and development opportunities within the L3 team; communicate training needs to the Operations Manager and the TSQ Manager, and actively support L3 advancement into superintendent-track roles.
• Foster a cohesive, high-performing team culture across rotating shifts where crew members take pride in their work and hold each other to high standards.
Quality Assurance and Standards
• Ensure all structured cabling, fiber optic, copper, pathway and rack installation work performed on shift meets ANSI/TIA-568, ANSI/TIA-942 and ISO/IEC 11801 requirements.
• Conduct in-progress and end-of-shift quality inspections; document findings and drive corrections before releasing work to the next phase or shift.
• Verify cable certification tests (Fluke DSX, OptiFiber Pro, OTDR) are performed, logged and meet pass criteria; remediate failing links before shift closeout.
• Enforce cable management, bend radius, fill capacity and labeling compliance on all installations regardless of shift timing or schedule pressure.
Safety Leadership
• Champion a zero-incident safety culture across every shift with no exceptions; the same standards apply at midnight on a holiday as during normal business hours.
• Lead pre-shift safety briefings and job hazard analyses (JHAs) for all tasks, with particular attention to elevated-risk activities in low-staffed overnight environments.
• Enforce PPE compliance, fall protection, lockout/tagout and all data center access protocols, including ESD requirements, clean room standards and live hall procedures.
• Back the on-shift Field TSQ (Training, Safety and Quality) Rep's independent stop-work authority without exception.
• Serve as the on-site emergency response lead during off-hours; maintain current contact lists, execute emergency procedures and report all incidents per company protocol.
Stakeholder Relations and Site Coordination
• Serve as the primary on-site point of contact during assigned shifts for facility staff, security personnel, on-call operators and owner representatives.
• Represent the company professionally in all interactions with facility and owner personnel; communicate shift status, progress and issues clearly and with confidence.
• Coordinate access requests, material staging and work area logistics with facility operations staff to maintain compliance with data center protocols and minimize disruption to live environments.
• Communicate field conditions, schedule risks and workforce issues to the Operations Manager at shift handoff and through written shift reports.
Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Expert-level knowledge of ANSI/TIA-568, ANSI/TIA-942 and ISO/IEC 11801.
• Advanced proficiency with cable certification equipment (Fluke DSX, OptiFiber Pro, OTDR/OLTS); ability to interpret complex test results, isolate faults and direct L3s in resolution.
• Ability to read, mark up and audit network drawings, cable schedules, rack elevations and project specifications.
• Proficiency with project management and field reporting platforms (Procore, ServiceNow, Smartsheet or equivalent); able to complete shift reports, inspection logs and time tracking using mobile and web tools.
Education and Experience
• 7–10 years of hands-on data center network infrastructure, structured cabling or low-voltage systems experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role overseeing lead-level technicians (L3 or equivalent).
• Prior experience managing multi-crew operations during night shifts, off-hours cutovers or 24/7 project environments is required.
• Proven ability to lead and develop Field Lead Technicians (L3) and, through them, crews of 10–25+ total personnel independently during off-hours.
• BICSI Installer 2 (Copper and Fiber) required; BICSI Technician required.
• OSHA 30-Hour (Construction or General Industry) required.
• Valid driver's license required.
• ESD and data center-specific safety certifications may be required by the facility operator.
Preferred Qualifications
• BICSI RCDD or RTPM (strongly preferred).

Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lb (34 kg).
• Comfortable on ladders, aerial lifts and scissor lifts during all shift hours.
