Product Development Engineer - Slurry Pumps
Senior Engineer, Pump Digital Solutions
Joining our global team of more than 10,000 people, you will be part of an agile and ambitious network of talented individuals contributing toward a sustainable future in mining. Seize the opportunity to learn, create, and deliver leading technology and services to the mining industry.
We are hiring a Senior Engineer to build the condition monitoring and digital platform for our slurry pumps and related rotating equipment. You will own the system end-to-end selecting and validating sensors, getting reliable data off pumps in harsh mine and mill environments, and turning that data into wear, vibration and performance insights that operators and our service teams act on. The role sits between R&D, product engineering and field service, with time on test rigs and at customer sites.
Your Responsibilities
- Select, specify and validate sensors for slurry pumps, including accelerometers, bearing temperature, pressure, flow, motor current, speed and wear sensing.
- Design rugged mounting, cabling and enclosures that survive abrasion, washdown, moisture and dust, and build retrofit kits for the installed base.
- Architect the edge-to-cloud data path: data acquisition, edge gateways, wired and wireless sensor networks, and integration with customer PLC, DCS and historian systems.
- Develop diagnostics for slurry pump failure modes such as bearing defects, imbalance, misalignment, cavitation, off-design operation, and impeller and liner wear.
- Build signal-processing pipelines and predictive models for wear life and remaining useful life, combining sensor, hydraulic and process data.
- Turn results into dashboards, reports and service recommendations that customers and technicians use.
- Plan and run lab trials and field pilots, including installation, commissioning and customer training.
- Feed field findings back to hydraulic, mechanical and materials engineers to improve pump and wear-part designs.
- Support sales and service teams with technical input on digital offerings and customer value cases.
What You Bring
- Education & Experience: An MS or PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Controls Engineering, or a related field, with research or industry experience in vibration analysis, machine diagnostics, signal processing, or prognostics using real test-rig or field data; or a BS in Engineering with 5+ years of experience in condition monitoring, reliability, or instrumentation involving pumps, compressors, mills, or similar rotating equipment.
- Mechanical & Packaging Design: Utilize CATIA to design robust enclosures for severe industrial environments. Select appropriate materials (plastics, epoxies) and adhesives based on physical properties and environmental hazards.
- Hardware & Firmware Development: Execute mixed-signal circuit design, PCB layout, and embedded firmware development (ESP32, RTOS, C/C++).
- Rapid Prototyping & Iteration: Take ownership of the initial design phase utilizing in-house rapid prototyping (MJF/FDM 3D printing) to accelerate the validation cycle and align stakeholder vision before scaling to external vendors.
- Cross-Functional Alignment: Proactively collaborate with manufacturing engineers, product owners, and end-users to distill complex field observations and equipment performance data into clear, actionable technical requirements.
- Validation & Field Testing: Write comprehensive test plans from scratch, design and implement physical test jigs, and occasionally travel to active mine sites to conduct on-site validation of sensor reliability, data acquisition hardware, and vibration-based condition monitoring systems for rotating equipment.
